Day in the life: Graduate Electrical Engineer
by Manthan Patel
As an electrical engineering graduate in building services, you spend your day working on both design and construction aspects of building projects. In the office, you work with specialised software like AutoCAD or Revit to design electrical systems such as power distribution, lighting, fire alarms, and data networks. You ensure that your designs meet safety regulations and energy efficiency standards while integrating smoothly with the mechanical, structural, and architectural aspects of the building.
Collaboration is key, so you frequently meet with senior engineers, project managers, and other teams to discuss project requirements, resolve technical issues, and adjust designs. You will also work on electrical load calculations, select appropriate equipment, and ensure compliance with local building codes.
While on site you will inspect ongoing construction work to verify that electrical systems are installed correctly and according to your designs. Occasionally we will be invited to factories to learn about new products and technologies and how we can incorporate these into our designs.
Outside of office life, there are plenty of social occasions, such as joining a sports club or the annual softball match between junior and senior staff! We also have end of the month socials and bi-annual “culture days” – there really is something for everyone, even a weekly board games evening!
