Day in the life: Graduate Mechanical Engineer

by Eva Meadowcroft

I joined Atelier Ten as a graduate mechanical engineer three years ago, fresh out of university, and since then, my role has evolved into that of an Intermediate Mechanical Engineer. Every day presents a new opportunity to work on innovative projects, collaborate with inspiring colleagues, and continue to grow both professionally and personally.

At Atelier Ten, we’re known for our sustainable design-based solutions, and as a Graduate Mechanical Engineer, you’ll be part of a multidisciplinary team working on high-profile projects across the globe. No two days are the same, and your journey into mechanical engineering will be filled with exciting challenges and opportunities to grow.

A typical day might begin with performing mechanical load calculations, focusing on key mechanical systems such as heating, cooling, and ventilation, ensuring that each design complies with local building codes and meets energy efficiency standards. Part of your role also involves design work using specialised software like AutoCAD and Revit to spatially plan systems, and selecting project-specific equipment to ensure everything runs smoothly.

Collaboration is a huge part of your role, so you’ll frequently meet with senior engineers, colleagues from other disciplines and architects to help fine-tune designs and ensure that the project stays on track. As you gain experience, you’ll take on more responsibility, and you’ll be encouraged to contribute to project decisions.

Some days, you’ll head out to construction sites to witness the installation of mechanical systems. These visits give you a valuable, hands-on understanding of how your designs are being brought to life in the real world. Seeing your work materialise on-site is one of the most rewarding parts of the job.

Softball GameBeyond your core responsibilities, there are plenty of opportunities to get involved with Atelier Ten’s inclusive and vibrant culture. Whether it’s joining the EDIB (Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging) group to promote a welcoming and diverse workplace or becoming part of the social committee to help plan exciting events, you’ll find lots of ways to contribute to the company’s community.

Atelier Ten also offers a great social life, from joining the company photography club to participating in the annual softball match. Monthly social events, bi-annual “culture days,” and even a weekly board games night ensure there’s something for everyone.

If you’re passionate about sustainability, innovative design, and working in a collaborative, supportive environment, this is the perfect place for you!
