Day in the life: Graduate Public Health Engineer

by Lucy Bennett

As a public health graduate, the typical day can vary quite a lot depending on which projects I have going on and what design stage they are.

A typical day in the office involves doing calculations on a range of services, from a hot water demand profile for a London office building to drainage pipework sizing in a residential tower, or doing a water balance calculation for a large development in Africa. I also could be collaborating with other disciplines to coordinate services within a 3D Revit model or liaising with local water authorities about new or existing supplies.

Some days we will not be in the office, that is usually on-site reviewing installations and looking for anything that deviates from our design, witnessing tests or signing off correct installations.

Occasionally we will be invited to factories to learn about new products and technologies and how we can incorporate these into our designs.

Culture DayThere is also the opportunity to be involved with various committees and groups such as the EDIB (Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging) group or the social committee, for which we have regular meetings where we plan events or suggest new ideas.
