Depending on experience, this position could be a Senior Environmental Designer or an Associate level role. The role will be located in Melbourne with flexible work from home options. About the role
This is a full time or part time (preferably 80% or more) role in our Melbourne office, working with our team of environmental designers. Ideally you will spend at least 3 days in the office per week to be accessible to junior staff. You will get to work on a range of innovative and exciting projects ranging from education, commercial and mixed use, institutional, masterplans, and more. You will work directly with clients, architects, engineers, and other consultants to provide analyses and recommendations that drive design decisions and enable projects to meet challenging sustainability targets. Your work will inform building design teams on strategies for energy conservation, carbon emissions reductions, net zero buildings, thermal comfort, and more.

You will be responsible for managing complex projects with exemplar sustainability ambitions. You will coordinate with client and design teams, develop work plans and project budgets, scope out and delegate tasks, provide QA support, and train junior staff. You can expect to develop sustainability visions, identify and recommend appropriate initiatives, integrate them into master plans and building designs, and administer benchmarking tools such as Green Star, Living Building Challenge, NABERS, and WELL. You will provide peer review support, mentor junior team members, and may have the opportunity to directly manage staff. You will be part of a dynamic, and growing team, working with colleagues in Melbourne and Sydney, as well as with teams in our offices in Asia Pacific, UK, USA, and elsewhere.

Duties

Projects

  • Manage large and complex sustainable building projects with support from senior staff, including managing clients, work plans, budgets, and junior staff contributions
  • Coordinate and liaise with design teams and clients throughout all stages of project design and delivery
  • Independently scope, resource, and delegate analysis tasks such as daylight, energy, thermal comfort, etc., with support from Practice Leads
  • Benchmark against green building certification programs like Green Star, Living Building Challenge, WELL, NABERS and others
  • Develop sustainability visions and strategies, make recommendations for integration, and communicate sustainability concepts to a diverse set of stakeholders
  • Lead and facilitate meetings and workshops with project teams to guide the development of sustainability vision and strategy
  • Provide QA support and peer review

Business & technical development

  • Contribute to Atelier Ten’s visible leadership through client engagement, industry events and social media
  • Scope out and develop fee proposals and assist with other business development activities
  • Contribute knowledge and develop local expertise within the design Practices (centres of excellence for internal technical & consulting skills)

Operations

  • Represent Atelier Ten in the industry and within professional organisations
  • Directly manage 1+ staff members and mentor them on career progression
  • Guide junior staff in technical tasks and consulting skills development

Necessary Qualifications

  • Degree in a field related to engineering, architecture, and/ or building science
  • 7+ years’ total professional experience in ESD, including 2+ years experience managing projects
  • Experience scoping and managing technical analysis work, including interrogating results
  • Demonstration of leading projects to successful Green Star rating achievement
  • Excellent proficiency in written and spoken English
  • Appropriate work visa status

Desired Qualifications (not required)

  • Accreditation in Green Star, LEED, WELL, ILFI, NABERS, Passivhaus or other sustainability benchmarking tools
  • Active leadership role in a relevant industry organisation, e.g. AIRAH, APHA, GBCA etc.
  • Experience and proficiency in environmental analysis tools such as Ladybug Tools, IES VE, or others.
  • Team (people) management or leadership experience
  • Professional organisation affiliation or commitment
  • Business development experience
  • Public speaking experience
  • Teaching experience

Who are you?
We are looking for someone with 5-10 years of Australian consulting experience in sustainability, including experience leading projects and coordinating with clients. You also have experience with some aspects of building physics, performance analysis, and benchmarking tools. You have an all-rounder’s understanding of holistically sustainable buildings and places. You look ahead and see design problems before they arrive, solving them collaboratively, collegially, and forthrightly. You are an effective communicator, especially of the opportunities you see and the analyses you undertake to test and validate your ideas.
