Decarbonizing the GSA’s Mollo Building at Greenbuild 2024
How does the nation’s largest building owner, the General Services Administration (GSA), transition buildings in its portfolio to zero carbon?
On Friday November 15th from 9:00-10:00am, join New York Associate, Nikita Jathan for a panel discussion exploring this very question. Nikita, along with David Polk from GSA, Gabe Wilcox from Krueck Sexton Partners, and Philip Brychta from WSP will provide an overview of their approach and process to decarbonize and electrify the existing 10-story Mollo Federal Building in New York City to guide future projects across the nation.
Early in the Mollo Building’s design process, bold owner commitments – to decarbonize and electrify – resulted in a cascade of design decisions. The panel will explore the decisions to reuse the existing building structure and to convert the building systems from fossil fuels to all-electric and how these laid the groundwork for major sustainability wins across carbon, energy, water, and more. The team will also outline the relationship between the Inflation Reduction Act and the ambitious overall project goals: LEED Platinum, Zero Energy, and Zero Carbon.
Participants will walk away with an understanding of:
- The GSA’s sustainable design goals in relation to the Inflation Reduction Act.
- Strategies to address existing building repositioning with expansion to meet building programming requirements.
- Considerations in transitioning to all electric, high-performance façades and systems and an overview of multiple different all-electric building systems.
- Tactics to communicate sustainability intent across multiple project stakeholders.
- How to optimize decisions across energy, water, and operational and embodied carbon emissions.
