Navigating Potential Mass Timber Pitfalls at Greenbuild 2024

The use of wood in buildings is not a new phenomenon, but with increasing focus on reducing carbon emissions, the construction industry has embraced mass timber construction in recent years. The benefit of building with a renewable resource that is also beautiful has caught the imagination of the building industry as well as mainstream media. Despite the potential benefits, there are also potential pitfalls of building with wood, many of which have been raised in recent scientific articles, and it has become increasingly challenging to navigate the sea of conflicting information on this topic. Decision making has become incredibly nuanced.

On Wednesday November 13th from 3:00-4:00pm, join San Francisco Associate Director, Amy Leedham for a workshop that will provide participants with the tools to identify and avoid some of the most significant challenges to mass timber construction and practical strategies for owners and design teams to respond to specific issues.

Amy, along with Jonathan Heppner from LEVER Architects and Paul Vanderford from Sustainable Northwest, will provide actionable insights to avoid common mass timber pitfalls and realize its full potential in the built environment. The structured discussion will address what sustainable forestry looks like and how to source wood for a project, the most effective applications of mass timber construction, and how this can be reflected in life cycle analysis.

The team will then engage with audience members to workshop responses to specific scenarios common with mass timber projects. We look forward to hearing each participant’s experiences and brainstorming with you!

After the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Appraise conflicting information surrounding mass timber construction, carbon emissions, and environmental impact.
  • Evaluate the suitability of using mass timber construction in common scenarios.
  • Develop and implement strategies for sourcing environmentally friendly wood.
  • Outline how whole building life cycle assessment, environmental product declarations and LEED v4 BD+C credit: Building Lifecycle Impact Reduction relates to global carbon tracking.
