This transformation of a historic building in Los Angeles marries art and technology in a 21st century museum and theater. Atelier Ten guided the team to create an environmentally friendly building that meets the art conservation standards of today and achieved LEED Gold certification.
The museum restored the Saban Building, formerly the Wilshire May Company department store, located on the corner of Wilshire & Fairfax in Los Angeles. A new spherical structure expands the Saban Building to house a state-of-the-art theater. The Saban Building’s adaptive reuse greatly reduced the project’s carbon footprint.
The museum contains a mixture of exhibition spaces, event venues, two state-of-the-art theaters, a restaurant and cafe, education studio, conservation studio, and a store. Atelier Ten worked with the design team to implement green building and operation measures to achieve LEED Gold certification. The design includes shaded outdoor space for gathering, low flow water fixtures, rooftop PV panels, and comfortable indoor environments for visitors.
