Flinn Hall and Edelman Hall, Hotchkiss School
with Robert A.M. Stern Architects
The two LEED Gold additions to the Hotchkiss School’s campus frame a lawn for student recreation while championing Hotchkiss’ initiative to incorporate green design into its traditional architectural style.
Atelier Ten guided the environmental design and LEED administration for both of these new-build, three-story residence halls. In order for the project to achieve LEED Gold certification, many environmental measures were seamlessly folded into the fabric of these buildings. These measures include natural ventilation, extensive daylighting, daylight sensoring, and the use of low-VOC and sustainable materials and water-conserving fixtures throughout. The site design includes native vegetation, shade trees, underground rainwater infiltrators and a bio-swale to clean surface runoff before it enters the adjacent lake.
