The newly renovated and expanded Franklin County Justice Center integrates creative daylighting solutions with ultra-efficient lighting design to provide a visually comfortable interior with connections to the outside. High performance glazing systems and envelope materials improve energy efficiency while maintaining the façade’s historic integrity.
Atelier Ten provided daylighting and façade analysis to optimize the glazing and façade performance of the new addition. A key project goal was to enhance the occupant’s visual experience, therefore daylighting analysis and electric lighting design services were integrated throughout the design process. The lighting provides an appealing visual experience using energy-efficient and cost-effective luminaires and controls.
Additionally, the green roof is directly visible to third floor occupants, providing connection to the exterior.
Located on historic Main Street in Greenfield, MA, the site is considered a “walkable site” based on the building scale, landscape, and façade design. Extensive natural wood finishes included high-quality casework, flooring, and doors of which 85% were FSC-Certified wood. The efficient HVAC systems combined with a high-performance envelope result in a predicted energy cost savings of 27.8% annually.
