As a cultural cornerstone for Nebraska, the Joslyn expansion creates a prominent new entrance open to the surrounding city while carefully balancing a precise indoor environment for the precious artwork. Atelier Ten’s role was focused on energy efficiency while optimizing the indoor environment for occupants and artwork alike.

In Omaha’s extreme climate, Atelier Ten’s main goal was to optimize the façade for energy performance while balancing daylight. Atelier Ten minimized excessive daylight on the south perimeter and ensured sufficient daylight for the north shop and east community rooms. By shifting the exterior shading to align with the over-exposed zone, Atelier Ten reduced solar heat gain on the South zone. To further improve thermal comfort and increase flexibility of the overlook gallery, Atelier Ten recommended minimizing glazing area at the skylight as much as possible and made recommendations to adjust the density and louver depth to further reduce solar heat gain.

Located in flood-prone Omaha, the new sculpture garden and landscape showcases native and adaptive plantings while also reducing exterior water for irrigation.
