The North London Hospice is a new build daycare centre for the elderly. The building provides daycare facilities for the local community, houses the Enfield Community Care Team who coordinate external care within the community and provides a community café at ground floor for all customers, staff and visitors.
Atelier Ten developed a low-energy design for the hospice using the principals of Passivhaus incorporating excellent levels of insulation, thermal performance and air tightness, solar hot water and ground source heat pump.
The North London Hospice is designed as a mixed-mode building providing fresh air ventilation via a mix of mechanical heat recovery ventilation units and openable windows for natural ventilation.
A ground source heat pump provides the buildings heating via underfloor heating and mechanical heat recovery ventilation units. In addition to the heating, the ground source heat pump provides background cooling to rooms that are at risk of over-heating for short periods of the year. The system is designed to provide efficient background cooling only and for short periods.
As well as developing the concept design and environmental strategy Atelier Ten provided the full detailed design of the mechanical, electrical and public health services.
