Atelier Ten designed the Oratory’s thoughtful lighting scheme to carefully balance subtle daylighting with low-energy decorative and performance electric lighting that uses fewer than 0.8 watts per square foot.
Oriented so the sun strikes the altar during Easter morning services, this building demanded a dramatic lighting concept. Throughout the nave, custom sconces and architecturally-concealed fixtures reinforce this ethereal effect. All interior lighting is keyed to specific visual tasks for the clergy and laic and provides specialized apse lighting during telecasts. The exterior lighting shapes the building, a classic Gothic arch rising toward the sky.
