The former home of Saga records, The Gramophone Works is a new landmark canal-side commercial scheme comprising a mix of refurbished, extended and new build contemporary office spaces.
The building features large, open plan working areas as well as communal facilities, cycle storage spaces and green areas at ground and roof levels.
The development aimed to breathe new life into a historic underused site to create vibrant and progressive office space to the most exacting contemporary standards.
By inheriting existing structural elements, the building avoided waste, construction activity; significantly reducing its embodied carbon footprint. The new-build sections are constructed using the latest in timber technology to create a sustainable and healthy phased development.
Atelier Ten completed the full building service design, sustainability and fire engineering on the project, from developing the brief to detailed Stage 4 design.
An Energy and Sustainability Strategy was developed for the planning application and the construction has been monitored throughout.
To service the complicated existing structure of the basement and lower office floors, we worked with the design team to provide highly detailed coordination of services. Our design achieved the visual aspirations of the architect while also satisfying the technical requirements for the building. A rooftop enclosure neatly wraps a fresh air ventilation plant room and discrete ground floor electrical rooms provide access and integrate with the public realm. Atelier Ten worked closely with the architect to retain the site’s character and heritage.
