One of the first LEED Gold buildings in the US, The Plaza at PPL Center’s integral environmental features ensure that it consumes 35% less energy than a comparable building, while optimizing occupant comfort.
Atelier Ten worked extensively with the project team throughout the design and construction of PPL’s headquarters building, leading the effort to achieve a LEED Gold certification. At the recommendation of Atelier Ten, the building envelope was improved through the incorporation of external bris soleil and canopies that reduce solar gain and glare. High performance glazing, insulated walls, and an EnergyStar roof were optimized by Atelier Ten to reduce heating and cooling loads. Inside, high efficiency building systems including underfloor air ventilation, enthalpy heat recovery, and ice storage help minimize conditioning energy consumption. Waterless urinals and other efficient fixtures reduce potable water use by 47%. A vegetated roof and stormwater filters remove debris and pollutants from runoff. High indoor air quality is ensured through the use of low-VOC finish materials and dedicated outdoor air ventilation.
