The Weill Neuroscience Institute at University of California San Francisco’s Mission Bay campus is a state of the art laboratory housing wet and dry laboratories, vivarium, clinical spaces and research offices. Atelier Ten provided technical guidance, analysis and support for mechanical system design and overall sustainability throughout the Lean Integrated Project Delivery process.
The project features an exterior shading system consisting of vertical fins on upper levels and deep horizontal shading for the ground level. Atelier Ten collaborated with the design team to develop shading design that minimizes the need for automated shades to be deployed. The shading system is also designed to reduce interior heat gain while balancing daylight. The shading design along with efficient heating and cooling systems maximizes occupant comfort and reduces energy.
Atelier Ten’s energy analysis informed the mechanical system design approach for this laboratory building to reduce energy use by 25%. Atelier Ten provided technical guidance on the energy efficiency measures including ventilated cages, exhaust air transfer and air flow reset.
The project is on track to achieve a LEED Gold certification.
