As part of the University of Sydney’s commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, the Abercrombie Business School expects to achieve an annual carbon footprint 40-49% better than benchmarks by maximising the potential for natural ventilation and fully day-lit learning spaces.
A diverse range of thermal environments suited to different program requirements ensures that a large portion of this building can be passively conditioned. This is achieved using a combination of earth ducts, displacement ventilation, and thermal mass strategies. Additionally, Atelier Ten optimized the shading design profile to control solar gains. Guiding the design towards a 5 Star Green Star rating, Atelier Ten informed project strategies for water conservation and reuse, renewable energy, and material resources.
