Atelier Ten led the sustainability vision for this net zero carbon school by incorporating energy-saving passive design strategies to create a high-quality indoor learning environment.

The building is organized in a pinwheel shape surrounding a central courtyard. Atelier Ten optimized the roof overhangs to reduce solar heat gains into classroom spaces that also block direct sun to create comfortable, daylit learning environments with views and access to the outdoors. The sloping roofs collect rainwater in the central circle to manage stormwater. As the project is a mass timber structure over a concrete foundation, Atelier Ten provided a life cycle assessment to optimize the concrete and reduce the carbon impact of the project.

Atelier Ten provide iterative energy modeling to develop an all-electric building and evaluated energy and carbon neutrality options. To achieve ILFI’s Zero Carbon Certification, Atelier Ten did a PV study that indcates that the rooftop PV panels can offset 100% of the building’s annual energy use.
