Reaching Zero Embodied Carbon at Greenbuild 2024
A stable climate demands that buildings radically reduce their carbon footprint and move toward carbon neutrality by 2050. While electrification, advancements in efficient decarbonized building systems and an accelerating clean grid have put zero operational carbon within sight, the path to zero embodied carbon is harder to see.
On Wednesday November 13th from 3:00-4:00pm, we invite you to join US Managing Director, Claire Maxfield and a panel of experts for a structured discussion that will explore the question: What do sustainability leaders need to do today for the entire industry to get to zero embodied carbon by 2050?
Claire will present alongside Brad Jacobson from EHDD, Don Davies from Davies-Crooks Associates and David Lehrer from UC Berkeley to identify legitimate pathways toward radical embodied carbon reductions and other major sources of carbon emissions that must be tackled to bring us to a zero-emissions built environment. They will share different ways to approach this challenge, what targets make sense, how to understand carbon offsets and variations between them, and what would it mean to target “absolute zero carbon” in the timeframe needed. After brief presentations by all speakers, the moderator will lead a discussion to answer this critical question.
This session will cover current issues faced by the industry including:
- Under what conditions are carbon offsets legitimate?
- What barriers do we need to overcome to get to true on-site carbon neutrality?
- How should architects, owners, and real estate professionals generally approach this problem strategically from the beginning of a project?
- What tools exist to simply set baselines, targets, and strategies on embodied carbon?
