Round of Applause for New York Healthcare
Healthcare facilities across New York City are demonstrating their commitment to protecting human health and well-being, not only through medical practice, but within their built environments. Now more than ever there is an emphasis on the future of healthcare and what the standards for design and function should look like for these essential facilities. Creating restorative, healthy, and healing environments are a top priority to increase staff productivity, relieve stress, and reduce patient recovery time. Atelier Ten has consulted on various healthcare facilities to elevate the patient experience while also reducing operational cost and integrating resilience strategies to adapt to the future.
In a recent collaboration with Perkins Eastman and Ennead Architects, the client Memorial Sloan Kettering recognized that their facilities greatly impact patient experience and can have a positive effect on health. Putting the patients and staff first, Atelier Ten optimized the building facades and provided daylight analysis for MSK’s David H. Koch Center for Cancer Care to provide access to views and better daylight distribution to connect patients to the outdoors. As the most recent recipient of the Healthcare Design’s Annual Design Showcase’s Award of Merit, The David H. Koch Center is a proven example of a next-generation facility. The building was designed to reduce energy consumption and operate at optimal efficiency even in the instance of a 500-year flood given its river-adjacent location. This LEED for Healthcare Gold certified cancer center not only provides a healthy and comfortable space for patients but is resilient to future climate change scenarios.
Atelier Ten’s experience with prominent healthcare institutions have extended beyond a conventional sustainability approach and include the implementation of progressive, innovative strategies that push the boundary on sustainability achievement. Of which notably includes the First Newly Constructed Hospital in New York State to achieve LEED Platinum.
Tactics that greatly contributed to this level of accomplishment begin with the optimization of the building facade, paired with daylight analysis, and an ambient lighting strategy to enrich the learning and healing environment.
New York City showcases a broader transformation across the healthcare sector, solidifying The David Koch Center for Cancer Care and high performing sustainability strategies as a model for other medical institutions.
