The Burrell Collection Museum wins the Andrew Doolan Best Building in Scotland Award
The Burrell Collection Museum has been honoured with the Andrew Doolan Best Building in Scotland Award by the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland.
Atelier Ten was part of a team led by John McAslan + Partners that delivered the refurbishment of the Grade A listed building, upgrading its environmental performance to become one of the first refurbished museums in the UK to achieve BREEAM Excellent certification. Working around the challenges of a Category A listed building, we had to find innovative ways of managing building services and environmental design to ensure the building met such high sustainability targets. By improving the building’s exterior and replacing power, heating, and lighting systems with more efficient, sustainable technologies, we have greatly enhanced its environmental performance and reduced energy demand by 50%.
The result was hailed by the Doolan Award judges as “an outstanding example of problem-solving and future-proofing that has rejuvenated an old friend.” The museum has been given a new lease of life and is now more sustainable, more accessible, and more flexible, making it better equipped to preserve and display its world-class collection, while also being adaptable for multiple uses to appeal to audiences old and new.
We are incredibly proud of this achievement, and it reinforces our commitment to designing buildings that not only push the boundaries of architectural excellence but also contribute to a more sustainable and energy-efficient future.
